Portulaca grandiflora, commonly called moss rose, grows to become very colorful. It is a low growing flowering ground cover that is sure to please. The plant is native to Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Unsurprisingly, portulacas are drought and heat tolerant. Moss rose is related to the invasive annual weed purslane, although the cultivated version does not spread as readily. Moss rose plants grow well in rocky, sandy soil that drains quickly.
